What are bone deformities?

Bone deformities are irregularities in the bones in your feet. They could be a nuisance or cause painful complications if left untreated. Some deformities are apparent when looking at your feet; other causes of the uncomfortable symptoms can’t be seen.

What are examples of bone deformities?

Examples of bone deformities include:

Bunions

Bunions are bony bumps that form on feet at the base of the big toe. They develop when bones in your foot move out of their normal alignment, causing the joint to protrude outward and often become painful.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe causes your toe to bend at its middle joint. Possible causes include wearing shoes that don’t fit well, foot injuries, diabetes, and illnesses. The cause isn’t always apparent.

Mallet toe

Mallet toe is similar to hammertoe but causes a bend at the joint nearest your toenail.

Bone spurs

Bone spurs are bony growths that develop along the edges of bones in your feet. They typically form in joints, areas where bones meet each other. The leading cause is osteoarthritis. While you might not immediately notice them, bone spurs can become painful when not treated.

What are the symptoms of bone deformities?

Bone deformities can cause:

  • Visible changes to the appearance of your feet
  • Ongoing or severe discomfort
  • Limited joint range of motion
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Redness

Bone irregularities can rub against your shoes, increasing the risk of calluses, corns, blisters, and irritation.

How are bone deformities diagnosed?

The Cascade Foot & Ankle team diagnoses bone deformities in your feet, ankles, or toes by examining your feet and discussing your medical history and symptoms. They offer on-site X-rays, lab work, and other diagnostic tests to confirm a diagnosis or determine its underlying cause.
